Wyoming continues to rank eighth in the nation for both oil and natural gas production despite uncertainty in the global economy and supply gluts.  According to the newly released Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) Oil and Natural Gas Report, most new wells are being permitted as wildcat wells in the Powder River Basin where operators are targeting unconventional, spatially expansive reservoirs.  The Powder River and Denver basin horizontal wells accounted for 40 percent of the state's total 2018 oil production from wildcat wells. This percent-contribution is expected to continue its upward trend in the future.
